Dozens of supporters with placards turned out this evening (June 23) and chanted 'free Palestine' as speeches were given via a megaphone. Police were present and were monitoring the situation. Several of those in attendance were holding placards from the Socialist Worker, a left-wing publication run by the Socialist Workers Party. Slogans on these placards included "Starmer has blood on his hands. Free Palestine" while others displayed a controversial phrase deemed by some as being antisemitic.

Man, 45, charged with rape (Image: NQ) A man has been charged with rape in a public garden. George Alieu, 45, of no fixed address, has been remanded in custody to appear at Brighton Magistrates’ Court today. Police had arrested a man on suspicion of rape after receiving reports that a woman had been sexually assaulted in Dorset Gardens in Brighton on Sunday at 9.05am. The victim is being supported by specially trained officers.

Police are conducting enquiries into allegations made by former patients of the Colwood and Larchwood NHS facilities in Haywards Heath during the 1970s,1980s and 1990s. The police force has said that the reports include those of physical and sexual assaults, as well as persistent neglect. Several potential suspects have been identified by the police.

Papers published by Brighton and Hove City Council on Wednesday show that it has managed its budget for the 2024/25 financial year without overspending. Councillor Jacob Taylor, cabinet member for finance and city regeneration, said that though the council has had to set “difficult budgets each year” due to the previous administrations overspending, the council is now in a good position. He told the Argus: “The Greens overspent the previous budget, and we made quite a fuss about it.
