    At some point, certain technologies effectively “win” and become ubiquitous standards by default. We have seen this over and over, but two that stand out are TCP/IP+Ethernet and Linux. More recently, it has become clear that Kubernetes is the de facto standard for delivering application payloads. Kubernetes is used to deliver cloud native apps, legacy monolithic applications, virtualization and just about anything else.

    Is a bifurcation of open source communities looming on the horizon? I recently attended a CNCF: KubeCon + CloudNativeCon China Summit in Hong Kong, where Chinese speakers and presentations dominated. This is expected in Hong Kong, but perhaps most enlightening was the number of net-new open source projects being developed primarily out of China. In recent years, China has increasingly become a center of gravity in the open source world.

    In an interesting twist of fate, I’ve been called back into the world of OpenStack and more specifically the world of Tungsten Fabric (TF), an open source software-defined networking (SDN) stack that was recently mothballed by the Linux Foundation Networking (LFN). I’m excited to re-engage with both projects given our long history together and what looks like a bright future for both. What is TF?
