For those of us who are a certain age, there were four catalogs that we looked forward to growing up. OK, maybe first I should explain to the younger set just what kind of catalog I'm talking about. These were treasure chests. Thick catalogs that were filled with dreams and imagination for young minds and hearts (not to mention clothes, appliances, and garden tools for the old fogies).

Minnesota Vikings In The Super Bowl? Yep, I Can Remember All FourIt's that time of year, the time when everyone is talking about the NFL's upcoming Super Bowl. It may be hard to believe, but there was a time when the Minnesota Vikings went to the Super Bowl. And then they went again. And then again. And then again. Hey, we were one of the greatest teams of all time!Unfortunately, it was the same time the Vikings lost the Super Bowl. And then again. And then again. And then again.

It's 18 feet wide, 18 feet across. Could a horse with a rider make that jump? Well, maybe...if a posse was after you!Devil's Gulch is not only a beautiful tourist spot in Palisades State Park near Garretson, South Dakota it's where legendary Old West outlaw Jesse James made the leap of his life! Maybe.... You are perhaps familiar with the famous 'Great Northfield, Minnesota Raid'.

Howdy, everybody!I thought I'd give you an update on my situation since I haven't been able to shoot the breeze with you in quite some time, playing that real country music variety we all love and of course our 'Mess Mandatory Merle!'As you know (or maybe not), I was diagnosed with Stage III Colo-Rectal cancer back in early March.

It's 1989 and a lot of things are going on in the world. President Ronald Reagan said goodbye and President George H.W. Bush said hello. Joe Montana led the San Francisco 49ers to a Super Bowl win and the World Series between Oakland and San Francisco became the most memorable in history with an earthquake during Game 3. Taylor Swift was born that year, and Lucille Ball died. But none of that mattered. The only thing that mattered was...the Nintendo GameBoy.

One and two-room schoolhouses. They used to be everywhere, and I don't mean you had to go back to the 'Little House On The Prairie' days to see them. I remember when I worked in Winner South Dakota back in the 1970s, there were small white schoolhouses out in the country, out in what some people would sarcastically call 'the middle of nowhere.' There would generally be one vehicle parked next to the school, the teacher's car, and an American Flag flying proudly on that tall pole beside the school.

No one likes to pay taxes. Any taxes. But we all do. Ben Franklin had it right: In this world nothing can be certain except death and taxes. Well, lets not talk about the former (too depressing), but the latter (OK, depressing maybe but not as much). There's all forms of taxes. When it's tax time so you know that. But specifically, property taxes. How bad are they? Well of course it depends where you live. If you're fortunate enough to call the Sunshine Sate of South Dakota home, not too bad.

I grew up about an hour from Sioux Falls and have lived for the nearly fifty years in South Dakota. I had never heard of Nick Piantanida and I had no idea the world wide tragic news he made in 1966, a tragedy that began in Sioux Falls. A while back I was going up and down the television dial when I happened upon an ESPN '30 For 30', their documentary series. I've always loved documentaries, whether they involves sports, news, politics, history or whatever.

For some people, the scariest thing about higher education is student loans. But at one of South Dakota's finest colleges, Mount Marty University, there may be more than students and teachers on campus!Mount Marty College earns a spot on the Only In Your State website thanks to the ghosts that apparently drift around Whitby Hall. Open since 1955, if you happen to see an apparition roaming around in gray polyester pants, you're not alone. And who are those guys in blue suits floating along?
