Since mid-March 2025, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office received a steady stream of reports about law enforcement imposters calling the families of jail inmates. The imposters name themselves as sheriff’s deputies. They call close relatives of the recently incarcerated, offering to release the inmate if the relative pays for an ankle monitor.

We pay particular attention this time of year to the signposts of spring, such as daffodil and tulip blooms, thunderstorms, and the return of hummingbirds. One signpost we don’t want to see, but which nevertheless accompanies spring weather is the return of door-to-door peddlers, solicitors, or “transient merchants” to borrow a legal term. A Dewitt woman recently contacted me to make the first report of a solicitor of the season.
