A 79-year-old Clinton man sent $5,500 cash to an address in Ocala, Florida, after a series of phone calls telling him he won a Mercedes Benz from Publishers Clearing House.

Scammers are targeting parents and other close relatives ofa jail inmates with a variation of the “family emergency” fraud. Since mid-March 2025, the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office received a steady stream of reports about law enforcement imposters calling the families of jail inmates. The imposters name themselves as sheriff’s deputies. They call close relatives of the recently incarcerated, offering to release the inmate if the relative pays for an ankle monitor.
