Randy Schein·Follow6 min read·--I. My actor friend Bill and I were proofreading legal documents in a law firm one evening. It was not exciting. Bill, a dark-haired, handsome fella with a wry wit, turned to me and said, “What is the most depressing place in our life?”“The Equity lounge,” I replied without taking a breath. Because it is the most depressing place in Bill’s and my life. The Equity lounge is where union actors hang out and get pumped up to audition for casting directors.

New Jersey - aka Dante's Ninth Circle of HellI've had my license for five years now. I drive in crappy Zipcars, by-the-hour rentals reeking of ancient cigarettes and rancid tunafish... abominations that'd be better off in a chop shop. I was 237% committed to being an actor. At 26 years old, my raison d’etre was my career. When meeting someone, I made sure to let ’em know what I did in about 20 seconds. “Nice to meet you.”“You, too. I’m an actor!”I was delusional. I was 5 foot 10 inches, weighed 142 pounds and could barely afford razor blades. I had done a few Off-Off Broadway shows, one of which wound up with another actor in an apoplectic, red-faced rage.

Plastic: it’s a miracle product when you think about it. You can shape it almost any way you want, it’s cheap to produce, lightweight, and sterile, which is why it’s a staple for the majority of food packaging seen in shops and has revolutionized the medical sector.
