The weigh-ins for Keyshawn Davis vs Edwin de los Santos took place yesterday and was very dramatic. Davis was scheduled to defend his WBO lightweight title for the first time. However, when weigh-ins came around Davis weighed 139.3lbs missing weight by 4.3lbs. This was a very substantial miss and had very big repercussions. Due to the weight miss, Keyshawn Davis has been stripped of his WBO title, which is now vacant.

America in recent years has had a bit of a drought regarding new heavyweight prospects. The only names of significance have been Jared Anderson and Richard Torrez Jr. Anderson is a bit shakey following his loss to Martin Bakole and his lacklustre comeback against Marios Kollias. Torrez has looked impressive so far but the point remains that these have been America’s 2 best heavyweight prospects.

We have fighters at the top such as Daniel Dubois, Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua rising contenders such as Fabio Wardley and hot prospects like Moses Itauma and Leo Atang. There are also plenty of other names between levels like Joe Joyce, Dillian Whyte, Frazer Clarke, etc.

Eddie Hearn and Matchroom Boxing very recently signed British heavyweight amateur standout Leo Atang back in April. Now in May it has been confirmed that Atang will be making his pro debut on the undercard of Jack Catterall vs Harlem Eubank. The card will take place on July 5th at the AO Arena in Manchester. This signing is very interesting as Atang is the first British heavyweight Hearn has signed in a while.

PFL is coming to Africa with the launch of PFL Africa and their Championship Series starting in South Africa. They announced this on their social media platforms giving the location and the main and co-main events. The event itself will take place in Cape Town, South Africa in the GrandWest Arena on July 26th. The event will be headlined by middleweight champion Johnny Eblen (16-0) defending against Costello Van Steenis (16-3).

Fabio Wardley was set to face Jarrell “Big Baby” Miller on June 7th for the WBA interim belt however it is not to be. It was announced on social media that Miller had to withdraw from the fight due to a shoulder injury. This unfortunate injury had the potential to throw a spanner in the works for this entire card but all was not lost. The announcement made sure to say a suitable replacement would be found and that is what has happened. It was announced that Wardley will now be fighting Justis Huni.

Following his stunning defeat of Tyson Fury all time great Oleksandr Usyk became undisputed heavyweight champion. Usyk was the first undisputed heavyweight champion in decades. However, following his victory 2 weeks later he was stripped of his IBF belt due to not fighting his mandatory and opting to rematch Fury. This left the IBF title vacant while Usyk fought and defeated Fury a 2nd time.

Bellator legend Patricio Pitbull lost his UFC debut at UFC 314 against Yair Rodriguez. This result is far from ideal for the veteran who expressed interest in fighting Alexander Volkanovski. This loss is a fairly big setback for the former Bellator champ who is 37 years old. He showed flashes of his Bellator days however Pitbull looked his age and past his best. But, despite this he is fairly optimistic. Congratulations to @panteraufc, we’ll see each other again.

For decades professional boxing has been illegal in Cuba courtesy of Fidel Castro since the 1960s. This meant a much greater focus on the amateur ranks for Cuban boxers. This resulted in Cuba becoming one of the most dominant countries when it comes to amateurs. It also meant that any Cuban boxer who aspired to become a professional had to defect and flee the country. However, the Cuban government lifted the ban in 2022 meaning amateurs can now turn over to the pros without needing to defect.
