    Storm surge continues to be one of the leading causes of death in hurricanes. It doesn’t just rise, it takes over. Storm surge happens when seawater is pushed onto land by a hurricane’s strong winds. The National Weather Service defines it as an “abnormal rise of water generated by a storm’s winds.” It can cause catastrophic flooding, structural damage, and loss of life, especially in areas without proper protection.     A Flood Advisory is in effect until 12:30 p.m. for portions of Jefferson, Orleans, and St. Bernard Parishes. 1-2 inches of rain have fallen in the past 24 hours. An additional 1-2 inches may be possible which could lead to areas of minor flooding. More rain is expected throughout the day, possible heavy with strong winds.
