With the recently completed Masters golf tournament on every television and social channel over the past two-plus weeks, it got me wondering; What are the Grand Slam events on the Championship Tour? I thought about it and there’s a solid four that stand out from all the others every year. Pipeline, Tahiti, Jeffreys Bay, and good old Bells.

Competition was halted in the middle of Round 4, Heat 3 at the 2017 Corona Open J-Bay as a 6-8 foot shark was spotted breeching from the water just outside the lineup. Jordy Smith, Filipe Toledo, and Julian Wilson had just a few minutes remaining in their Round 4 heat when the shark appeared and competition was halted. Judges and the safety crew in the water spotted the shark mid-air as it jumped approximately 100 yards outside where the surfers were sitting.

Fantasy SURFERGetting Fantasy Surfer advice from someone is a lot like getting a birthday card from your grandmother. Usually, the sentiment is there and well-meaning, but that $3 check only goes so far — Fantasy Surfer advice, likewise, is usually skewed toward a favorite surfer, and can be pretty flawed. But we’re changing that model this year – in the Fantasy Surfer department, anyway.

In a last minute update to the upcoming Oi Rio Pro, Kelly Slater has withdrawn from the event with less than 24 hours to go until the waiting period begins. Fantasy SURFEREach year since 2003, thousands of Fantasy Surfer players attempt to predict the success of World Tour competitors at each WCT event. Those with the best strategies (or perhaps a really lucky Magic 8 ball) accumulate enough points by season’s end to be crowned Fantasy Surfer Champion. Past FS victors have been software gurus (Kevin Priester), ex racecar drivers (Luca Fioravanti), former top-tier professional surfers (Shea Lopez), and several industry insiders.

Fantasy SURFER With the world title race starting to heat up a bit after Rio, the OuterKnown Fiji Pro will play a pivotal role in determining who will be left standing at the end of the year. Tyler Wright and Stephanie Gilmore will both be wearing the yellow leader’s jersey as they are tied atop the leaderboard. Add to that Sally Fitzgibbons (a perennial favorite in Fiji) who sits just behind them, and you have all the makings of a compelling contest.

We’re just a few days away from the second event of the Men’s & Women’s 2018 WSL Championship Tours at Bells Beach. Typically, most of the surfers stay in Australia between the Gold Coast and Bells Beach to give themselves a chance to adjust to the area, temperature changes that occur between the two locations, and to decompress after the first intense event of the year before the next one begins.

After an incredibly fast and well run event at Jeffrey’s Bay, the Men’s championship tour has taken several weeks off before they reassemble in Tahiti this week. Filipe Toledo was the winner in J-Bay for the second dominant year in a row. But Toledo has a notorious, if not dubious history in Tahiti. He even has a 0.00 heat score to his credit when he failed to catch a single wave one year in a heat at Teahupoo.
