Batman: Dark Patterns #5 – Dan Watters, Writer; Hayden Sherman, Artist; Triona Farrell, ColoristRay: The first arc of this unique early-Batman anthology was a full-on horror story, featuring a horrifically scarred villain out for revenge against worse targets. This second arc is more of a subtle thriller, but with one of the best settings for a freakshow I’ve seen in a long time.

Willow Wilson and Gavin Guidry’s farewell two-part arc. More than any other issue in this run, this feels like a throwback to the era that got me into comics – the Triangle Era.

He loves huge set pieces, big villains, and crazy actions – as well as unexpected twists and turns. And it doesn’t get more unexpected than Lori Lemaris, Superman’s mermaid girlfriend from his college years, returning as a villain. Along with her fellow mermaids, she’s in thrall to the dark God of the deep, Dagon.
