For years, the School District has been offering in June and July free breakfasts and lunches to children in the county, providing a community service that Superintendent David Moore said helps keep students healthy during summer-vacation months. “It might not be the best meal of the day, but, for some kids, it’s the only consistent meals they’re getting,” Moore said recently. “We see a need in the community, and we’re able to respond without spending any local tax dollars.

After a winter that saw a dramatic increase in the number of blue Breeze Airways jets flying into and out of Vero Beach Regional Airport, the arrival of summer has seen the number of flights drop dramatically. Breeze’s monthly departures from Vero Beach climbed to an all-time high of 154 in March, according to 2025 statistics provided by Airport Director Todd Scher, before sliding to 145 in April and 103 in May.

Gov. Ron DeSantis’ office last week announced he had signed into law a multi-faceted, firefighters-welfare bill that limits their standard work week to 42 hours to “reduce burnout” on the job. Turns out, though, the announcement wasn’t entirely accurate. The new law merely encourages local jurisdictions like Indian River County that employ Florida’s firefighters to adopt the recommended work-week restriction.

Don’t read too much into the County Commission’s recent decision to expand the Urban Services Boundary for the first time since the lines were drawn in 1990. Contrary to what you might’ve read or heard in the aftermath of that controversial May 20 vote, the commissioners aren’t caving to pressure from greedy developers who see our county as the next frontier to become engulfed by the hellish urban sprawl we see to our south.
