The winds of change in our field are rapidly converging, as we discussed in the previous edition of “Online: Trending Now.” The anticipated enrollment cliff, reductions in federal and state funding, increased inflation, and dwindling public support for tuition increases will combine to put even greater pressure on university budgets. Meanwhile, the capabilities of generative AI are accelerating at compounding rates.

Generative AI (GenAI) continues to advance with reasoning power, competing with Ph.D.-level knowledge in math and several of the science fields. We are beginning to see autonomous agents that can perform tasks that require multiple steps as well as stacked tasks that are increasingly complex. The next step seems to be to embody that knowledge and those skills.

Perhaps this was merely a move to increase engagement with the OpenAI GPT-4o app. Or perhaps this model of AI is getting a boost in using contextual knowledge. Then again, OpenAI reported it as a glitch of sorts. In any case, this capability is a startling advancement with GPT moving into a “coworker” or “friend” mode.

Rather, it is our students’ need to gain knowledge, experience and skills with the technologies before they submit applications to employers. I can recall the days when we shifted from classic office tools to more sophisticated ones toward the end of the 20th century.
