Georgia's pro-Western president has said she will stay in post until new parliamentary elections are held, as protests continue over the government's decision to put EU accession negotiations on hold. Speaking to the BBC, Salome Zourabichvili, who has sided with the opposition, claimed the current parliament is "illegitimate" after allegations of fraud in last month's elections.

Police in Georgia have clashed with demonstrators in the centre of the capital Tbilisi protesting against last month's disputed election which they say was stolen by the government. The protesters had set up tents and barriers at a major junction near Tbilisi State University and security and riot police detained a number of people as they moved in to clear the area.

Georgia's MPs have voted to overturn a presidential veto on a contentious “transparency on foreign influence” bill - often dubbed “foreign agents law” - which has sparked several weeks of protests in the capital Tbilisi. Under the legislation, media and non-governmental organisations that receive over 20% of their funding from abroad will have to register as “organisations acting in the interest of a foreign power”, submit themselves to stringent audits, or face punitive fines.
