GETS SERIOUS”

Raymond Benson
When
the famous United Artists studio was formed in 1919 by D. W. Griffith, Mary
Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and Charlie Chaplin, the organization was intended
to showcase works by the four principles as well as other talents in Hollywood
at the time. Chaplin then made his first feature film, The Kid, released
in 1921. It was a huge success.

“ADDIE
AND MOZE’S ROAD TRIP”
By
Raymond Benson
This
absolute gem of a film has finally received the Criterion treatment in high
definition. Paper Moon was already a delight, but now it’s even more so.
Based
on the decently-selling 1971 novel Addie Pray by Joe David Brown,
Paramount Pictures had scooped up the rights and had secured John Huston to
direct it with Paul Newman starring with one of his daughters.

“THE
DREAM IS ALWAYS THE SAME”
By
Raymond Benson
One
of the hallmark and influential pictures of the early 1980s was Paul Brickman’s
Risky Business, which is also known for arguably making Tom Cruise a
star overnight. Upon its release in 1983, this coming-of-age comedy-drama that
many critics compared to the likes of The Graduate (1967) captured the
zeitgeist of the era.

“A
WORLD OF PURE IMAGINATION”
By

We
all love Gene Wilder, right? His wide-eyed innocence and ability to reach a comic,
near-hysterical emotional state (“My name is FRANKENSTEEN!!!”) were
trademarks for this gentle, brilliant actor who graced a few classic pictures
of the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

“THE
BRITISH PSYCHO”
By
Raymond Benson
The
acclaimed filmmaker Michael Powell, who had enjoyed a magnificent ten-year
collaboration with producer/writer Emeric Pressburger between 1941-1951 (they
were known as “The Archers), set off on his own in the remainder of the 50s. His career was unfairly and abruptly cut short, in Britain at least, with the
release of Powell’s 1960 feature, Peeping Tom.
