Many of the most novel and innovative scientific discoveries in medicine have resulted from tireless and dedicated efforts by surgeon-scientists. Using their unique exposure to the intricacies of disease and physiology, surgeons provide a unique perspective in advancing the science of clinical medicine. One mechanism by which departments can support and financially develop junior surgeons along the path of clinical research is through career development awards.
