Thunder rumbled across Lamar County and rain hammered the sheet iron roof of my grandfather’s pole barn filled with sweet smelling alfalfa on one side, and dusty Johnson Grass on the other. It was the mid 1960s and Cousin and I sat on bales of hay, shooting dirt dauber nests with our BB guns. It was early spring, so there were fewer yellow jacket and red wasp nests to use as targets, which probably worked in our favor. In our shelter, it was a perfect day, cool and full of potential.
