The month of July proved our value as journalists, from the Presidential debate to the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. This was followed by President Biden’s decision not to run for re-election and Vice President Kamala Harris’s decision to step into the race for President. That’s just on the national front; journalists were also just as busy in local news. Unfortunately, more journalists lost their jobs in July because of downsizing, buyouts, and newsroom closings.

I was finishing this job list today when I learned about CNN’s massive job cuts. At least 100 people will lose their jobs, which means they will lose money to pay bills and support their families. It doesn’t feel good losing a job—I’ve been there. What’s important now is that we help them get work in another newsroom. The CNN cuts are just another reminder of why I started the #CallingAllJournalists Initiative. Any one of us today could lose our jobs, and then what?
