Summer is here. And with it, I find myself breathing a heavy sigh of relief, followed quickly by a hesitant intake of breath. Relief because school is over. Hesitancy because, well, summer is challenging as a parent. And I have a special challenge, faced by many these days: I work from home. This is not my first summer in this position, and I've fond that even though I work full-time from home (without childcare or constant camps) our summer can be structured and fun.

I’m not sure about you, but I do not find birthday parties fun. Also — and I’m finally ready to admit this — I don’t like kids that much. I mean, I like my kids, I like my friends’ kids. But 25 to 30 random kids from school all at my house or all in my care somewhere else? No! It’s not enjoyable. Also, it’s not reasonable to expect my child to hang out with all of them. It’s just too much. Birthday parties can be quite pricey.

Food is at the heart of the military community. Whether it’s family readiness potlucks, chili cook-offs or meal trains when babies are born, there’s always a reason to bring food to a friend or new neighbor. However, one in six military families cannot put healthy meals on the table regularly. Food insecurity is a significant issue facing the military community, and it’s time to discuss it.

My first two kids were born overseas in 2008 and 2010, so we were super grateful to have Facebook to keep in touch with friends and family. After their births, my husband would leave the hospital with our digital camera, go home, shower and upload a picture or two to announce the birth of, first, our son, then next, our daughter. Easy, simple, fun. We loved the immediate response of love, support and everyone's sheer joy.
