Private Rooney, 24, from Co Donegal, was killed while on deployment with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) on December 14th 2022. Mr Harris is set to raise the “frustration and concern” of the Government at the “lack of progress” in the case during a series of political meetings in Lebanon.

By Rebecca Black, PAJust three out of 10,000 people who applied to join the PSNI failed to clear security vetting based on social media posts, the Northern Ireland Policing Board has heard. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher previously expressed concern at the number of young people failing vetting over social media activity. During a meeting of the board on Thursday, Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly questioned Mr Boutcher further on what sort of activity would lead to a candidate failing the vetting.

A major weapons manufacturer is set to open a third facility in the North, Assembly members have heard. Thales, a French-owned arms company, operates two sites in the region – with high-precision missiles designed and produced at a plant in east Belfast, and final missile assembly at another plant in Crossgar, Co Down. It designs and produces missiles including Starstreak, Lightweight Multi-role Missile (LMM) systems as well as final assembly of the Saab designed NLAW.

The Thales plant in east Belfast is to supply 5,000 air defence missiles to Ukraine in a deal worth up to £1.6 billion (€2 billion), the British government has announced.
