By Rebecca Black, PAThe 1989 police investigation into the murder of John Devine was “seriously defective”, Northern Ireland’s Police Ombudsman has found. The 37-year-old was murdered by loyalists on Fallswater Street in west Belfast on July 23rd, 1989. The father-of-three died after armed men entered his home and shot him a number of times at close range. Police Ombudsman Marie Anderson has highlighted a “series of failures” in the investigation.

Tánaiste Simon Harris is set to highlight the memory of Irish peacekeeper Sean Rooney during a visit to Lebanon. Private Rooney, 24, from Co Donegal, was killed while on deployment with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) on December 14th 2022. Mr Harris is set to raise the “frustration and concern” of the Government at the “lack of progress” in the case during a series of political meetings in Lebanon.

By Rebecca Black, PAJust three out of 10,000 people who applied to join the PSNI failed to clear security vetting based on social media posts, the Northern Ireland Policing Board has heard. Chief Constable Jon Boutcher previously expressed concern at the number of young people failing vetting over social media activity. During a meeting of the board on Thursday, Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly questioned Mr Boutcher further on what sort of activity would lead to a candidate failing the vetting.
