The Department of Water Resources (DWR) announced March 22, 2024 a second increase in the State Water Project (SWP) allocations forecast for 2024. The forecasted allocation is now 30 % of requested supplies, up from the 15 % allocation update announced in February 2024. According to a press release, the revised allocation forecast is based on snow survey measurements and data up until March 1, and spring runoff forecasts up until March 8.

The increasing area of impervious surfaces in cities, due to urbanization, has exacerbated urban flooding and stormwater issues. According to the latest reports by the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), stormwater runoff causes $9 billion in infrastructure damages annually and has already polluted nearly 600,000 miles of rivers and streams. Due to this, more than 13 million acres of lakes, reservoirs and ponds are considered impaired.

As I write this, I am in Spokane, Washington, for the International Erosion Control Association’s (IECA) Annual Conference. It is my first conference of the year, so it feels like a 2024 kick-off. It is always a great event to connect with our audience and gain insight on what is on their radar for the year. So far, in 2024, a lot of people are concerned with the cost of materials and are weary of regulations given it is an election year.
