It seems logical that if a child grows up without parental supervision and interaction, the child will indeed lead a more isolated lifestyle. I am not a sociologist, rather a parent who understands that direct “hands-on” communication with a child is particularly valuable during their formative years, which according to experts, is from birth to age five. As a youngster, I was one of seven kids with two parents who both worked full-time.

The Holidays will soon to be in the rearview mirror, and 2022 is just around the bend. Are you wondering how you’re going to get everything done in time? As a young girl growing up in Minnetonka with six siblings and two parents in the house, I can still hear my Mom say, “If only I had an extra pair of hands.” I remember thinking, “You’d look pretty funny if you did!” How could I possibly understand then that she was really just asking for help? Maybe then she could have taken a break.

“Time,” they say, waits for no one; you can’t stop it, nor can you catch it! But what you can do with time is spend it with others. Only 170 years ago, city leaders of Excelsior had the foresight to make an “investment in people” by deciding not to build homes along 13 acres of its shoreline. Instead, a beautiful park we know as The Excelsior Commons was established, keeping the area natural.

Someday, if there is a competition to enter for those of us who enjoy painting with watercolors in coloring books, please let me know. While I wouldn’t expect to win a grand prize for the many pages I have painted to date, I can’t deny its therapeutic benefits. When I carve out that precious hour or so from an already too-hectic schedule, my blood pressure subsides immediately. A tranquility fills my mind and soul, which becomes my personal grand prize.

An optimist always endeavors to find something positive in all situations. Three years ago, any optimist would have been hard-pressed to find anything positive about experiencing Covid. For hundreds of thousands of families, being quarantined in their homes and kept from their extended families was more than difficult; in fact, to many grandparents, it felt like a punishment! Finding a silver lining for Covid might indeed challenge even the most positive optimist.

Have you ever noticed that pet owners can talk “forever” to other pet owners? They seem to roll from one topic into the next often without even coming up for air. Perhaps it’s because they sense automatic acceptance with the other person as though they are “on the same page” when sharing stories regarding each of their pet’s behavior. What also seems to captivate all dog owners’ interests is tips on finding a good veterinarian and a dog groomer at a more reasonable rate.
