A couple remodeling their rented home in Batavia, a suburb west of Chicago, 45 years ago found some interesting items behind the walls — old bottles, shoes and corncobs. But one discovery was the stuff of nightmares. While ripping out a plaster wall, the wife spotted human bones in the debris, including a piece of a skull and a lower jawbone, according to a 1978 article from the Batavia Chronicle. “When I first found it, I was hysterical,” Martha Skinner told the newspaper.

A Bedford Park police officer was hospitalized after he was shot multiple times during a struggle at a Speedway gas station in the southern suburb, police said. While responding to a report of a car crash at about 3:40 a.m., officers found an unoccupied vehicle with “heavy damage” in the 6700 block of South Archer Road. The car was reported stolen in an aggravated vehicular hijacking in Chicago, police said.
