Why was a runner up on one of the country's biggest television shows standing with a pack of journalists to hear Sir Keir Starmer deliver a speech on the UK Government's long-awaited strategic defence review? Alexander was a far cry away from the luxury Scottish castle in the Highlands where The Traitors is filmed.

But last night’s STV debate with candidates in Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse’s by-election had me squirming. The campaign has be plagued by candidates either not speaking with journalists or defending party adverts accused of misinformation. Hopes were not high for the live debate, aired on STV’s Scotland Tonight.

It included commitments for at least six new munitions factories across the country, an additional attack submarine every 18 months and £15 billion on nuclear warheads. Sir Keir said thousands of jobs, including in Scotland, would be created, securing growth for “generations to come”. In his speech, the Prime Minister warned specifically of the threat posed by Russia amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, but also warned of nuclear risks and cyber attacks.

Under-18s were moved from young offenders' institutions and into secure accommodation. (Image: Newsquest) Scotland’s secure accommodation units for vulnerable under-18s is “grinding to a halt” amid serious capacity concerns, ministers have been warned. There are just two beds available out of a total of 71 secure accommodation spots for children considered to be a “significant risk” to themselves or others in the community.
