Charities have expressed their gratitude for readers’ donations to the Times and Sunday Times Christmas Appeal, which have surpassed £1.86 million. The appeal, which closes on Wednesday, has been raising money since the end of November for Whizz Kidz, Feeding Britain and Street Child Hundreds of thousands of pounds have been donated to each charity, which will be combined with generous match funding.

But she has had to revise the list since getting a job as a presenter on her favourite horticultural programme. She was working as a massage therapist, using her feet not her hands, when she first appeared on Gardeners’ World.

On a walk at her local wetland one morning, Emma Pearce was asked by a stranger if she knew what bird was making the unusual call they could both hear. Pearce, 29, is not a lifelong birdwatcher. She does, however, have the Merlin app on her phone, and she was able to capture the birdsong and identify it for the woman: the common reed warbler. “My enthusiasm started at zero,” says Pearce, a producer who lives in London.
