The Pine River Institute will learn later this month whether it has won itself a new vehicle. The local institute is one of five finalists for the Outdoor Accessibility & Education Award from Land Rover’s Defender Services Awards, which recognizes charitable organizations in Canada and the United States. The winner is set to be announced Nov. 23, receiving a new Land Rover Defender SUV and US$25,000.

Dufferin County is in the process of creating a new master housing strategy. During a presentation to county council Oct. 10, Sue Ritchie Raymond, project manager at Tim Welch Consultants Inc.; Cassandra Vink, project manager for the Older Adult Service Report at Vink Consulting; and Erik Karvinen, population growth lead with Watson & Associates Economists Ltd., made a number of recommendations on everything related to housing in the county.

Dufferin Waste and the Grand Valley Public Library are hosting a winter clothing swap for people to get rid of what they don’t want in exchange for something else. On Nov. 9 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., bring your unwanted jackets, hats, mittens, scarves, sweaters and any other winter clothing you can think of. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a chance to win prizes.

Oh deer! Look out for animals on the road in areas like Mulmur, Melanchthon and Mono. Dufferin County Ontario Provincial Police is advising the community to be vigilant in areas known for deer activity, especially around dawn and dusk. OPP says it is critical to be aware of your surroundings to prevent collisions. Hot spots include: County Road 18 in Mulmur between Fifth Sideroad and the Mulmur-Nottawasaga Townline. County Road 124 in Melancthon between Highway 10 and County Road 17.

November is an event filled month at the Museum of Dufferin (MoD), here is what you can expect. MoD will be honouring our veterans by holding a ceremony led by representatives of the Shelburne Legion Branch 220 and Orangeville Legion Branch 223. The ceremony is followed by a presentation by local historian and Governor General’s Award Winner, Neil Orford. This is a free event. From 11 a. m. to 3 p. m. participants can learn how to crochet a poppy in this free workshop.
