Romans take their food and wine seriously, and you will never be stuck for somewhere to enjoy a good meal in the city. Aside from the ubiquitous takeaway pizza and tramezzini (sandwiches), snack culture is a more recent phenomenon – but it has been spurred on by the recession, and there are now places where you can grab a decent stand-up or carry-out meal for €10 (£8.80). And then, of course, there are the classics, from cacio e pepe to involtini di manzo al sugo (rolled beef in tomato sauce).

The (love it or hate it) modernist structure houses the Altar of Augustan Peace, which dates to 9 BC. The altar itself is a testament to the power of the Roman Empire at its peak, marking a golden age of peace and prosperity.
