Just weeks after Vice President Kamala Harris promised to tackle price gouging, a Kroger executive admitted in court that the company had done just that. The Senior Director of Pricing at Kroger testified in a federal lawsuit that the company raised prices for some products higher than inflation. The testimony was part of a hearing in the suit brought by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which seeks to block a $24.6 billion merger between Kroger and fellow grocery giant, Albertsons.

It upheld a California law that only allows the sale of pork, veal, and eggs from animals raised in improved living conditions. Thanks to Big Ag, our food system has been in crisis for years. We’re seeing hollowed-out rural communities, ruined environments, and a handful of ultra-rich corporations profiting from the mess they’ve made. While Big Ag makes record profits, families have seen grocery store prices skyrocket. Meanwhile, median farmer income has been negative for 24 of the last 25 years. So far, our leaders have not made the changes we need to repair our food system.
