It felt like it happened overnight, I watched , a writer and mom blogger I’d always looked up to and admired, go from modeling what seemed like a perfect happy family, to losing her husband Hal, to pancreatic cancer. Rebecca’s twins are close in age to my daughter, and I admit to having a parasocial relationship with her, admiring her, and even envying her a little from afar. But in her 2022 memoir All of This, Woolf dismantles that gauzy, filtered image of home and happiness.

At a recent dinner party surrounded by mostly single, successful, confident (and previously married) women ages 35 to 55, it struck me that not one of them — myself included — was actively dating or in a relationship with a man. It was the first time that had been the case, all of us collectively experiencing the same dating-app fatigue and general disappointment when pursuing new relationships, be they casual, serious, or something in between.

There is a common misconception that it is mostly men or young people who want to be in open relationships, but almost every couple I know who has explored the idea has done so because of a woman’s desire to be physically intimate with someone other than her longtime partner. When I first started writing about non-monogamy five years ago — both my own and others, in my capacity as a sex columnist — I was met with lots of pushback, pearl-clutching, and public displays of pity for my children.

This time last year I made a pledge to get back out there and start dating again. I was married for almost 15 years, and after my divorce, I was sort of looking forward to giving apps a shot since they weren’t a thing the last time I was single. Little did I know that app dating is actual hell. I was ghosted by the people I was interested in, stalked by the ones I wasn’t. Not to mention the amount of false advertising from men who looked nothing like the pictures they posted.

My children lost their father five years ago. They were 13, 10, 7, and 7 when he died. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in the summer of 2018, the day before he turned 44, and he died four months later. There is a lot more to be said here, of course, but I wanted to explain this at the top, because once you mention the early death of someone so close to you, you will almost always be asked how it happened. Then you will be asked how someone can help.

I am a mother of two teenagers, a boy and a girl. I am also very sex positive and have been casually dating for several years since my divorce. Here’s my issue: I am attracted to guys who are very nice in the streets; I just wish they were a little less nice in the sheets. I think this is related to something that no one is talking about publicly, which is how complicated casual sex has become.
