    Hope, and sometimes wry humour, are threaded through the interactions with medical and general staff and other patients - the boredom, the mundane and familiar daily hospital routine. There is also fear and pain. Trish is no Pollyanna. The poems are deceptively simple, but the light touch and acute observation is anything but lightweight. It packs a satisfying sharpness and astringency of observation when you least expect it.

    Under the newly-announced traffic light system, any disabled person receiving the Jobseeker Benefit (or anyone receiving the Supported Living Payment who has been assessed as able to work) will begin in the hazy, four-laned glory of a green light setting. One transgression, however, and you’re instantly plunged into the orange setting, irrespective of whether or not the transgression actually happened.

    Since his passing, I’ve spoken to so many people who are hurting from their loss. One thing is consistent: everyone felt he was their close, personal friend. There is a sense of pride in people who knew him – whether through one meeting or a lifetime of shared memories. To be able to do that – make everyone feel like they were his person – what a gift.

    This week, Whaikaha - the Ministry of Disabled People released yet another update to the purchasing restrictions recently imposed on people who receive flexible support funding. While this recent announcement restores degrees of flexibility for some people, it continues to leave others out in the dark. We know there has always been an invisible asterisk that sat alongside the phrase 'flexible funding'. Flexible, sure, but only sort of. Or flexible within particular boundaries.

    The D*List is a new online magazine dedicated to disability stories, and disabled kinship and joy. Executive director Red Nicholson tells the story so far. On a warm February day in 2021, a group of people sat together and asked a question. What the hell do we do about ableism? Ableism, a phenomenon well understood by disabled people but often invisible to everyone else, is a set of attitudes, beliefs and behaviours that diminish our agency, mana and ability to live the lives we choose.
