Imagine this… You are visiting Portland and one afternoon while exploring you find yourself standing on a footbridge, looking down over streetcar tracks. Suddenly you notice a runaway streetcar hurling out of control toward the bridge. Down the track there are five people; and the banks are too steep to climb to get off the track in time. You realize that the only way to stop the out-of-control streetcar is to drop a very heavy weight onto its path.

“In the particular is the universal,” said James Joyce. In Forest of Noise, the particular is the Israel-Hamas war and the suffering of the Gazans, as recorded by the award-winning poet Mosab Abu Toha. He told his harrowing story of capture by the Israel Defense Forces and eventual release in the New Yorker, and one of the poems in this collection retells that story.

When I was a child, a few weeks before Christmas each year my family would gather with friends and neighbors at a nearby barn. The barn was home to gentle trail-ride horses, a Shetland pony known for its bite, and a scattering of sheep, goats, and rabbits that made up a petting zoo. On the floor of the barn, hay bales would be arranged as seats, centered around a wooden rack. Us children would don towels on our heads cinched with neckties, along with bathrobes cut to fit our small frames.
