It’s safe to say the New York Mets have fallen on tough times. The team that started the season like a house on fire has, at least for now, been extinguished. They’ve gone 5-5 in their last 10 games and lost 4 of their last 5. In those five games, they’ve scored a paltry 8 runs. Things look bad. I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. The bats have gone cold, the defense has been a mess, and they’re wasting some gutsy pitching performances.

As we slide into May, the New York Mets seem to be firing, but not on all cylinders, which may be the scary part for NL and AL foes alike. One of my favorite pastimes is scouring the Mets roster and picking out bench players who might become fan favorites and saving graces, and this year is no different.

Loving the New York Mets is practically part of my DNA. Even people I haven’t seen in decades know it. Years ago, I ran into a friend I hadn’t seen since junior high, and his first question was, “You still like the Mets?” Another time, I popped into a corner store across from my best friend’s old house, and the guy behind the counter—who hadn’t seen me in 15 years—wryly asked, “How are the Mets doing?” So what I’m about to say may shock you: I don’t want this offseason to end.

If you need proof that New York Mets fans are fired up for the 2025 season, look no further than the impossible-to-find spring training hat. I was reminded of this over the weekend while hanging out with my Yankees fan cousin. “You're excited about the Mets this year,” he said with a wry smile. After years of being browbeaten by my own franchise, I had to think about it for a split second. Old habits do die hard.

Super Bowl 59 was a celebration of excellence that few outside of Philadelphia are happy about, but no one can deny. The Eagles 40-22 route of the defending Super Bowl champion Chiefs was one for the ages and starred a ghost of New York sports past. That would be Mr. Saquon Barkley, who not only left the New York Football Giants for the rival Eagles after being spurned by the team but immediately after breaking the NFL single-season rushing record and winning a championship.
