    On a bright, chilly morning in Cambridge, England, a few weeks ago – as a New Yorker “Talk of the Town” piece might have it – about 150 people gathered at the University of Cambridge’s Computer Laboratory, a place not nearly as exciting as it sounds, for a one-day symposium to celebrate the life and work of Ross Anderson, FRS FRSE FREng and, until his untimely death last year, professor of security engineering at the university.

    Is it true that writers feel less free these days? In a final connection with academe, I still sit on the editorial committee of an Italian journal of comparative literature. Our next issue is on censorship. Most contributions concern totalitarian regimes past and present, but Italians are aware, of course, of the debate on political correctness and free speech in the United Kingdom and United States, and I was tasked with writing something about this.

    Do we have a national literature? If we do, is it something that requires or deserves our attention? I recall in 2018 at a conference – “Translation Now” – in Boston, how Daniel Hahn OBE described his work promoting literary translation: addressing a gathering of Scottish publishers, he told us, he had chided them for considering mostly Scottish authors, thus ignoring the vast store of riches on offer around the world.
