It is also a reserve of increasingly sought-after minerals that are critical for modern life, making it a site of major competition for resources. Some governments are gearing up to exploit the seabed, while others want such deep-sea mining halted until its risks to marine life and the environment are better understood.

A marine protected area (MPA) may sound like a biodiversity haven, safe from the many external stresses of human activity. What is becoming apparent, however, is that this conservation tool rarely shelters waters from warming, changing chemistry, habitat loss, or species shifts – in other words, the impacts of climate change. Scientists are therefore increasingly recommending that MPA designs evolve from static to adaptive.

After a pandemic-induced hiatus, the Third Belt and Road Forum took place on 17-18 October in Beijing. It provided rare insight into China and member countries’ aspirations for the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as it enters its second decade. The BRI is evolving, with new announcements made particularly in the fields of “green” and “blue” (ocean) cooperation. There were hints of a more cautious approach from China.
