Between giving Cell a Senzu Bean and letting Dr. Gero build Androids 16, 17, 18 & 19 over the course of three years, Goku makes a lot of bad decisions in Dragon Ball Z's Cell Saga. That said, Goku's "bad decisions" aren't nearly as dumb as some fans like to suggest. If you want to make Goku sparing Gero a matter of intelligence and not a moral issue, Future Trunks’ very existence is proof Goku is doing the smart thing by letting Gero finish his Androids.

Goku no longer killing because he trained with Kami is one of those details most Dragon Ball fans just sort of accept as canon, even though neither the manga nor anime comment on any kind of internal change within Goku. If anything, the idea that Goku stopped killing in Dragon Ball Z because God humbled him and made him see the value of life is outright refuted by the very arc fans claim it was introduced in.
