After years and years of designs and redesigns, the proposed towers at the Commercial Drive and Broadway Safeway site in Vancouver will finally be discussed during a public hearing Thursday. The site has seen many versions over the years, with the highrises getting higher with every passing year. In 2017, a proposal called for towers between 12 and 24 storeys high, with a new Safeway on the eastern end of the parking lot and a public plaza in the middle of the lot.

The first tower proposed under the City of Vancouver's Broadway Plan - meant to greatly increase density along a corridor that will soon feature a subway - passed unanimously at city council Thursday evening. The public hearing began Tuesday night, with many speakers coming out to oppose or support the 19-storey rental highrise, which is set to be located along East 10th between Main and Fraser. The street is currently lined with single-family homes and large trees and is a designated bike path.
