Huambachano, an Indigenous scholar, lived for many years in Aotearoa, the Indigenous name for New Zealand, and teaches courses including Food Fights and Treaty Rights, Indigenous Food Cosmologies and Reclaiming Indigenous Intellectual Sovereignty. Her new book, “Recovering Our Ancestral Foodways: Indigenous Traditions as a Recipe for Living Well,” was just released this past August by the University of California Press. Food sovereignty “is more than meeting caloric needs,” Huambachano says.
