A big moment for Sofidel in Duluth on Friday, as leaders celebrated the start of a $200 million dollar expansion project. Sofidel bought the plant in West Duluth last year. And now, they are going to be adding 160 jobs and a secondary finishing process. Right now, the 100 workers make giant rolls of tissue paper. Those are shipped to other facilities, where they are finished into toilet paper, paper towels, and napkins that we buy at stores like Costco.

Victory Christian Academy is pleased to announce that the annual Victory 5K race will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025. This family-friendly community event is also a certified and sanctioned USATF race, drawing many runners from across Minnesota. Last year with the 5K relaunch, they had 250 participants registered, which is an unheard-of number for a first year race. The anticipated registration for 2025 is 300-400 participants.

An exciting moment at North Star Elementary in Virginia. All four 3rd grade classes gathered in the commons area on Thursday morning for a celebration for completing the Reading Champions program. Reading Champions is a partnership between U.S. Steel and the Pittsburgh Penguins, and encourages kids to read 20 minutes a day. That’s the same number of minutes in an NHL period. Classes are provided 25 books about different topics like teamwork, hockey, and penguins.

Lake Country Power is calling on volunteers of all ages to lend their “green touch” to McCarthy Beach State Park near Side Lake on Thursday, May 8, 2025, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m.The volunteer work will be directed by the state park, which may include outdoor activities such as clearing hiking trails, raking leaves and pine needles, collecting litter, cleaning camp sites, gathering downed limbs, and cleaning the shoreline.
