AbstractGlycosphingolipids (GSL) are important bioactive components of cellular membranes. Complex GSLs, containing sialic acid residues are known as gangliosides and are highly abundant in the brain. Diseases of ganglioside metabolism often result in severe, early-onset neurodegeneration.
