Several residents of Los Angeles who were affected by the deadly Palisades wildfire sued city authorities over claims that municipal utility power lines ignited the fire, according to a lawsuit filed Monday. The suit cited a Washington Post article dated January 12, in which the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power told the newspaper its power lines near the origin of the fire had been disconnected from the electricity system for five years, which the residents’ lawyers said was incorrect.

Southern Japan was hit by a strong earthquake today that authorities said did not warrant the kind of megaquake warning that was triggered for the first time last year. A quake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck the Kyushu region at 9:19 p.m. (2:19 a.m. Hawaii time) today, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. After an investigation, the JMA said the quake did not warrant special measures related to seismic activity in the Nankai Trough.

The Sackler family, owners of Purdue Pharma, is offering to increase their financial contribution to a bankruptcy settlement of opioid lawsuits, while agreeing to some exposure to future litigation, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday. Some family members who own the OxyContin maker have agreed to raise their total contribution to approximately $6.5 billion, up from $6 billion under a previous plan, the report said, citing people with knowledge of confidential mediation discussions.
