USDA reported 10% of Illinois soybeans were planted as of April 21 compared to 10% at the same time last season and 7% on average. Corn planting reached 7% complete as of the same date compared to 10% last year and 11% on average.

Recent rains have helped some and hurt others, according to University of Illinois Extension Beef Specialist Travis Meteer, who noted southern Illinois is too wet while portions of northern and central Illinois are still highlighted on the U.S. Drought Monitor.

USDA’s prospective plantings report predicted a 5% increase in corn acres and 4% decrease in soybean acres in the U.S. this planting season.
