Zookeepers and guests are mourning a beloved, sociable tortoise who lived for well over 100 years before dying at the St. Louis Zoo. Zoo officials said in a Facebook post that Othello the Aldabra giant tortoise was euthanized April 8 because of a gastrointestinal issue. He and another tortoise, Ray, arrived in the United States in 1938, already full-grown adults, then came to the zoo in 2004. His exact age was unknown.

A 6-year-old boy in Illinois was still within view of his home when he was struck and killed by a car while crossing the street to his school bus stop, according to police. Decatur police responded to the call around 7:20 a.m. April 10 about a pedestrian who was struck and lying in the road, according to a news release. Officers learned a blue 2024 Nissan Rogue had struck him while he was crossing the street.

A man strangled his wife to death, stored her body in his car and went to a job interview, Texas officials told news outlets. Then officials said her body was found in a Mexico desert. Jorge Mares Raygoza, 47, was arrested March 28, six days after his wife’s body was discovered on desert parkland in Juarez, Mexico. He was charged with murder and booked into county jail, according to an April 8 news release from the City of El Paso.

Three Amish children died on the way to school when their horse-drawn buggy was rear-ended by an SUV in northern Indiana, news outlets reported. WIBC reported the accident happened just before 8 a.m. on April 9. The victims, all siblings, were Glenda Jo Yoder, 13, Darrell Yoder, 10, and Devon Yoder, 9. Police told WNDU the driver of a Mercedes-Benz GLA hit the buggy, throwing all three siblings from it.

A brawl between two groups ended with two men shot after combatants brought a gun, a bat, and a bow and arrow into the mix, media outlets reported. The incident started at 9 p.m. April 8 in northwest Houston, according to KHOU. At first, the fight was just an argument between two groups of men, Houston police told KTRK. Then it escalated to a physical fight, according to KPRC, and the array of weapons came out. KTRK reported the archer tried to shoot the gunman, who then fired.

A family spring break trip ended in tragedy when a car crash claimed the life of a 14-year-old boy from Illinois. Jordan Laskowski, his sister Riley, his mother, his grandmother and another sister, were driving through Lebanon, Indiana, when the single-car crash occurred April 4, according to WMAQ. The crash ejected Jordan and Riley from the car, WMAQ reported. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital and his sister was severely injured, the outlet reported.

A reticulated giraffe surprised her keepers when she gave birth in March, just four months after arriving at the zoo. Kipepeo, a 4-year-old giraffe at the Maryland Zoo in Baltimore, started acting a little differently on March 26, according to a zoo news release. Zoo spokesperson Mike Evitts told McClatchy News in a phone interview Kipepeo seemed "unsettled" and showed less interest in food.
