I have always heard that time is a thief, and I have recently come to realize how true it is. Time steals our childhood, our youth, our young adulthood, our babies, our elderly, and some of the happiest experiences in our lives become memories. And for some, time even steals the memories. My daddy always said it is the circle of life, and since he was the smartest man I have ever known, I say he was right.

Spring is definitely in the air in East Texas. It is evident not only by the pollen that is torturing many of us, but by the number of bicyclists and pedestrians we see on the roads. TxDOT's Be Safe Drive Smart safety campaign has officially launched, and this is a good time to remind you that sharing the road means sharing it with not only other vehicles, but with motorcycles, cyclists and pedestrians.

We all know what it's like being a teenager. Some of us are still living like we are 18 years old. Dreaming big, no worries, and the only thing on our minds is what we are doing right now or plans for the weekend. We love to hear about what our local teenagers are dreaming about and planning. We want to help them look into the future and plan accordingly. If we as teachers and parents could do that, it would be an awesome accomplishment.

Many times, in my conversations with the public, I find they are unaware of what TxDOT does on a day-to-day basis. The consensus is we fill potholes and slow down traffic. I thought with the new year, now would be a perfect time to highlight how much more TxDOT does. With 25 districts spread across the state, they cover every county and maintain and oversee construction of all state highways.

Entering the holiday season just signals a faster pace for all of us. So much to do, so much to plan. But many times, especially this time of year, we get so busy that we tend to forget how much our lives are blessed each day. As I was writing this, I tried to think of something different besides the normal holiday turkey time, Christmas shopping and New Year plans.

Nov. 7 is quickly approaching and none of us are prepared. I know. You have to stop and think about the significance of that day. Many of you don't know or have forgotten since last year. Let me remind you. Nov. 7 is significant because it was on this day in 2000 that Texas saw its last deathless day on Texas roadways. There have been fatalities every day since that day, and here we are at almost 24 years later. It is an anniversary we don't want to celebrate and wish we didn't observe.

A lot of us remember riding in the back seat with no safety belt. Heck, I rode up in the back window looking at the clouds most of the time. I'm not even sure my parents' old Chevrolet Impala had seat belts in the back seat. And child safety seats? My mother would quickly throw up her arm to hold us back. Somehow it worked. Thank goodness we know better today. I'm not sure how I lived through those growing up years.

As summer fades and school buses begin to roll, many of us are planning the last hooray of the summer on Labor Day weekend. This holiday is historically known for fireworks, outdoor cooking, swimming and having a few cold ones. The problem is that many people will drive after consuming those cold ones, and that is dangerous for all of us. There is an average of 65 alcohol-related crashes every day. That is an attention-getter. Lives can be extinguished because someone chooses to drink and drive.
