1 INTRODUCTION The most difficult challenge for ecological theory has been explaining the nonhomogeneous distribution of species, which has encouraged the development of various hypotheses with varying degrees of support (Pianka, 1996; Willig et al., 2003). Climate-based hypotheses have been shown to be the most effective in explaining patterns of global diversity (Gillman & Wright, 2014).
