INTRODUCTION Necrosis- and ethylene-inducing like proteins (NLPs) are a superfamily of proteins widely found in bacteria, fungi and oomycetes (Seidl & Van den Ackerveken, 2019). NLPs can be present in microorganisms that are plant-pathogens but also occur in non-pathogenic taxa suggesting their role is not limited to virulence in plants (Bhatti et al., 2017; Tekaia & Latgé, 2005).
