On Oct. 1, the minimum wage increased in Ontario, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Prince Edward Island. All other provinces except Alberta brought in increases earlier this year. That means most minimum-wage workers are doing better, right? Not necessarily. Minimum-wage workers living on their own are most likely to rent. In recent years, rent increases have outpaced minimum wage increases, eating away at workers' additional income.

Earlier this month, Toronto saw the opening of Dunn House, a four-story building with 51 non-market, supportive housing apartments. It will provide homes to unhoused individuals with complex medical and social needs. The feat deserves kudos, but it also raises the question: Why aren’t we doing more of it? The short answer is that governments don’t prioritize non-market housing.
