Although President Trump’s elimination of the Department of Education needs congressional approval to stick — hence the judicial block of his order Thursday — nixing the department bureaucracy will not condemn children to functional illiteracy. The department’s own “nation’s report card” for 2024 found that only 30 percent of eighth-graders read at or above proficiency levels. Three decades ago, that figure was 29 percent.

So, while it’s possible that the return to in-person learning is related to increased aggression in schools, it’s really difficult to parse out what is related to the pandemic specifically and what is a continuation of a trend that was initiated well before the pandemic. I think it’s important to be aware that children’s behavioral health services are consistently under-resourced.
