In the vain hope of making Wi-Fi faster, unlicensed spectrum supporters appear to be committing an error of misdiagnosis in their current push to allocate ever-more unlicensed spectrum in the highly prized mid-band. Like a doctor over-prescribing antibiotics for a viral infection, more unlicensed spectrum risks the long-term health of our communications ecosystem and, unfortunately, isn’t even doing the Wi-Fi patient any good.

Like October 2, 2024 Today I published a research paper (Lessons from the History of Wi-Fi) on the (minimal) effect of the FCC’s unfortunate assignment of 1,200 MHz of new spectrum to Wi-Fi. Touted as essential to keeping up with the ridiculous download speeds now offered by cable companies in their attempt to outclass fiber and 5G fixed wireless access residential broadband, Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz do nothing for ordinary users. Wi-Fi has had the ability to exceed 1 Gbps over medium to short...

The first half of 2024 bid us farewell a few days ago. If I could, I would have thrown seven stones behind it, as Libyans used to do after intolerable guests left their homes, in the hope that they would never return. Now, our world is beginning to tread towards the second half. The year 2024 has not brought us what we love or hate. That is the truth. Upon its arrival, it found that the previous years had left it a series of crises and wars.

In May 2022, nine months after the Taliban retook power in Afghanistan, I visited a girls’ secondary school that was still open in the north in spite of a ban on education for girls above sixth grade. Communities in the area, which has a long history of valuing education, had refused to comply. I met with a group of 11th-grade math students who told me about their hopes for the future. “I don’t want to end up trapped at home and condemned to a domestic life,” one female student told me.
