1 INTRODUCTION Scleromochlus taylori is one of the most iconic, historically important and enigmatic Triassic reptiles. Historically considered to be a form close to either pterosaur or dinosaur origins (Bennett, 1996, 2013, 2020; Benton, 1999; Gauthier, 1984, 1986; Gauthier et al., 1988; Padian, 1984; Sereno, 1991; Woodward, 1907), many aspects of its anatomy and phylogenetic relationships have been poorly understood.
