    Editorial: Allow a Deschutes Basin water bankPublished 7:30 pm Tuesday, June 3, 2025It looks like the Legislature may grant permission for a water bank to be set up in Deschutes Basin. But there has been some pushback. A water bank would help get water in the basin where it should go, providing a bit of flexibility within the rigidity of Oregon water law. Irrigators and water users could make a deposit of water in the bank. That would make it available for others to withdraw and use.

    Editorial: The Legislature should go on a bill dietPublished 7:25 pm Tuesday, June 3, 2025We spent some time on Sunday with the 300 bills that Rep. Paul Evans, D-Monmouth, submitted to the Oregon Legislature this year. After 100 bills, we stopped counting. Others did count them up and say he has the distinction of submitting the most of any legislator this session. Among the bills, one would declare "One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest" as the official state film of Oregon.

    Guest column: HB 2977 "1% for wildlife" is a lifelinePublished 7:00 am Sunday, June 1, 2025On May 25, over the Memorial Day weekend, a passerby found a severely injured river otter on the side of Highway 97 just north of Bend, near Tumalo Place and Deschutes Junction. The otter looked dead, but the driver noticed slight movement and contacted the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office, who brought him to Think Wild for emergency care.
