Ethan Leonard Wadley a middle school student from Lithia Springs was named the recipient of a Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship, which provides a four-year school scholarship to attend a high school or equivalent program to meet his advanced intellectual needs. Wadley, an eighth-grader at The Westminster Schools, was named earlier this fall among the 26 gifted student recipients in the class of 2029.

With over 211,000 votes counted, the recall attempt for progressive Alameda County District Attorney Pamela Price appears to have been successful. The latest election results, released Thursday night, show the yes for recall votes ahead, with nearly 65% of voters agreeing to recall Price. On Wednesday, Price released a statement on her Instagram account urging patience and optimism while votes were still being counted at the Alameda County Registrar of Voters.

Douglas County School System’s Tanisha Carroll, a fourth-grade teacher at New Manchester Elementary School, was named one of the winners of a Southwire contest. Southwire celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Back to School event this year, donating 30,000 backpacks full of school supplies to students in more than 25 communities and expanding its My Favorite Teacher competition.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, also called National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Douglasville nonprofit Gertrude’s House recognizes survivor Elaine Sagoes, 69, turning 70 in December. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month was started in 1985 by the American Cancer Society and Imperial Chemical Industries. The initial purpose of the month was to promote mammograms as the first line of defense against breast cancer.

According to the July MLS numbers for Douglas County, days on the market for homes are increasing. Some good news is that affordability is also increasing. And there is more inventory.

As 2024’s real estate market moves into its summer season, Douglas County’s housing market is gaining momentum, with key indicators showing year-over-year improvements in May 2024. Units sold in May surpassed last year's sales by 7.9%, and the number of homes on the market increased by 73.6% compared to the same period last year, noted John Ryan, chief marketing officer for Georgia MLS, who responded by email to a request for comment.

U.S. Navy sailors serve and protect from around the globe, and every sailor has their start somewhere. Petty Officer 3rd Class John Fambrough, a native of Douglasville, serves the U.S. Navy assigned to Naval Ophthalmic Readiness Activity (NORA) Yorktown, Virginia. Fambrough joined the Navy three years ago. Today, he serves as a hospital corpsman. He graduated from Douglas County High School in 2020 and is currently attending Southern New Hampshire University.

And, Chapel Hill High continues to maintain its status as one of the top high schools in the state, ranked in the current listing at No. 131 among over 300 high schools statewide. Schools are ranked on their performance on state-required tests, graduation and how well they prepare students for college.

Marquis Chachere was named 2023’s Mentor of the Year at Youth Villages Inner Harbour (YVIH) Campus in Douglasville. Youth Villages’ campus is home to a residential treatment program for emotionally and behaviorally troubled children and youth located in Douglasville. Chachere said he’s been mentoring since 2022.
