It powers our manufacturing, mining, and minerals processing sectors, which employ over 400,000 people and generate seven times more economic activity in WA than gas that is exported. Without gas, WA would lose its competitive edge, its jobs, and affordable energy. That’s why we have a longstanding policy of reserving 15 per cent of all exported LNG for domestic use and keeping 100 per cent of onshore WA gas in WA, which has served us well for decades.

A new online service from the UK’s Office for National Statistics (ONS) aims to facilitate just that. Launched in March 2024, the Explore Local Statistics service collates 57 local measurements, across topics ranging from health and school results to smoking and income levels.

WA’s gas policy is the envy of the nation and requires the equivalent of 15 per cent of the gas produced for LNG projects in the State to be delivered to the local market. It also prohibits the export of onshore gas that can access the local pipeline network — mainly fields in the Midwest, or “Perth Basin”.
